Midrand High School

Midrand High School is a state secondary school located at 1 Cnr First And Third Roads, Halfway Gardens, Midrand, 1685, Gauteng Province, South Africa. The school’s EMIS number is 700150987 and postal address is P.O.Box 4730, Halfway House Midrand, 1685

Midrand High school was started in 1993 through the efforts of a few energetic, effective people: Brian Algie and Speedo Horn being the two who spearheaded the school. It started off as a parallel medium high school on the premises of Halfway House Primary School, that was located behind the taxi rank in Halfway House. The late Mr Cas Wessels allowed the school to use the office where the toilet paper was stored!

Fortunately this beautiful campus in Halfway Gardens was completed in 1993 when the school could move in with 73 learners. The first principal was appointed in the person of Brian Algie. Emile Nel was the first vice principal and the first two HOD’s were Michelle Whitfield (English) and Almarie van Zyl (Afrikaans).

Mr Algie left a legacy behind during his term of office as founding principal. He will be fondly remembered as a blessing- the big Brian with the big voice and the big heart! Through the years the school has had a fair share of disappointments and failures but indeed these served as lessons to guide the future.

Since Mr Algie’s retirement, the school has been taken to new and great heights by Mrs Almarie Van Zyl whose term of office was from 2005 to June 2016. Under the tireless and passionate leadership of Mrs Van Zyl, the school has grown phenomenally. Since her long-deserved retirement, the school has been managed by Mrs C Reddy in an Acting capacity.

In 2014, the school turned 21 years and several successes were celebrated: The elated exclamations around the sports field, the applause for achievements in cultural activities and the proud presentations to pupils who received accolades for academics such as Marc Ground, Dianne de Bude, Anthony van Zyl, Keren Moonian, Neenu Sajan, Jane Ndlovu, Nivisha Maharaj and Nimmy Sajan, Taahir Lutchman, to mention but a few. Despite many challenges Midrand High has maintained a high matric pass rate with more than 60% matric exemptions or Bachelors passes (since CAPS was implemented). This has resulted in our school being “1 of the 100 Circle of Excellence Schools of the Alan Gray Orbis Foundation.” This bears testimony to the fact that the staff at MHS has always been dedicated and committed to excellence and has always been prepared to go the extra mile.

We are pleased to acknowledge the corporate support we received along the way. A highlight is the involvement of Johnson and Johnson, FHI 360 and NBI with the Bridge to Employment (BTE) programme. Johnson & Johnson has continued a relationship with MHS in 2015 and 2016. This prestigious programme came to an end in 2014 and it is appropriate to appreciate those stakeholders who afforded our current grade 12 learners three years of extended opportunities and global exposure in Amsterdam and in October 2014 in Ireland. Shireen Maharaj and her team at J+J Medical Midrand, Mariaan Scott from NBI, Petrus Lombard and everyone in the Junior Tukkie office at the University of Pretoria, Amanda and Lisa from FHI360 in Washington and last but not the least, Ms. Vijai the BTE co-ordinator at MHS in 2014.

Away from theatre of daily activities, the staff, management team and school governing bodies met, planned and strategized to be innovative in preparing our learners to be the best for the world as per the vision of this school.

As this vision is anticipated in all we do, we have afforded our learners many opportunities: such as the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington and New York; bi-annual tours are arranged overseas, we have been in the top four of the SA Reserve Bank Monetary Policy Committee Competition since 2012, we take part in the UN debating competition were we have been awarded gold; we also have a formidable chess team.  Through the years, parents viewed this as the school of choice where education was at the centre of all activities.

The school looks forward to a more successful future as an academic institution of note in the Midrand Area.
